Prof. Dr. Uğur ATIKOL addressed a discussion panel on “The Future of Electricity in TRNC”

The chair of Energy Research Center (ERC), Prof. Dr. Uğur Atikol, attended a discussion panel on 30 March, 2022, titled “The Future of Electricity in TRNC” organized by the Faculty of Business and Economy in Eastern Mediterranean University. In his speech, he drew attention to the ever-growing importance of utility demand-side management (DSM) that would be a useful strategy in not only easing the demand during peak hours but also shifting some of the demand to the times when renewable energy is available.

Prof. Dr. Uğur Atikol emphasized that utilities usually consider purchasing new power plants to match the demand during the peak hours that usually operate for a short period of time in a whole year. He questioned the economic justification of these peak generators compared to possible DSM options that would either shift the demand to off-peak hours or ease them out with energy efficiency measures at those hours. He pointed out that DSM strategies can be a win-win approach for KIB-TEK, the consumers and the environment.
