Design Week - Spring 2025-26
Engineering Design is a structured and iterative process through which engineers transform ideas into practical, safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions. By integrating scientific principles, mathematical analysis, engineering judgement, and creativity, the design process encompasses problem identification, concept development, modelling and analysis, prototyping, testing, and continuous refinement while carefully considering functionality, manufacturability, safety, ethics, sustainability, and economic feasibility.
At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, engineering design projects and hands-on learning form the foundation of our ABET-accredited BS Mechanical Engineering and BS Mechatronics Engineering programs. These experiences bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world engineering practice, empowering students to apply core engineering principles in meaningful and innovative ways. Through active participation in design, experimentation, and prototype development, students cultivate essential professional skills, including analytical problem-solving, creativity, innovation, teamwork, leadership, and effective communication.
This spring, the Mechanical Engineering Department proudly continues its tradition of organizing Design Week, a celebration of innovation, engineering excellence, and student creativity. The event will bring together students from the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering programs to showcase their innovative design projects and fully functional prototypes.
These projects reflect the technical depth, creativity, and multidisciplinary problem-solving abilities developed throughout the students' engineering education. Final-year students will present and demonstrate their Capstone Design Projects before panels of academic and industry juries, highlighting their readiness for professional engineering practice and their ability to address real-world engineering challenges.
Design Week will feature a diverse portfolio of engineering activities and demonstrations, including:
- Autonomous Guided Vehicles
- Design and Development of Robotic Arms
- Design and Development of Recumbent Human-Powered Trikes
- Heat Sink Design
- PV/Solar Thermal Collector System Design
- Vibration Design and Analysis of Beams
- Capstone Design Team Projects:
- Solar Sourced Thermal Battery
- Sustainable Air Conditioning System
- Drag Measuring System
- Spiral Robotic Arm - 1.0
- Human-powered Solar/Electric hybrid vehicle
To recognize academic excellence and outstanding achievement, High Honor and Honor Certificates will also be awarded to deserving students during Design Week, Spring 2025–26.
